Bucharest, the City of Contrasts
Bucharest, or "the little Paris", is the capital city of Romania and the country's centre of cultural and economic life. Bucharest was first attested in 1459, during the rule of Vlad the Impeller, who will be known later as Dracula. Bucharest is a city of contrasts, a place where the new and the old, the aristocratic elegance and the suburban life blend successfully.
The Triumphal Arch, the Village Museum or the Palace of Parliament – ranked second in place after the Pentagon according to its surface- are mandatory locations on the list of a tourist who visits Bucharest.
Other "musts" include the National Museum of Art, once the Royal Palace, the National History Museum on Calea Victoriei, housing the splendid silverware of the national Treasury, and Curtea Veche with its decorated little 16th century church, the Romanian Athenaeum, the Cismigiu Garden or the Herastrau Park.
Local specialties to look for include pottery, glassware, linen and woodcarvings. Another unforgettable experience would be a visit to the thronging Talcioc organized on Sunday morning; this is an old items market on the bank of Dambovita.
The capital's restaurants are regaining their vigor; grilled beef, chicken or pork are the basis of many local dishes, followed by a variety of pastries for dessert. Enliven your meals with Romanian wines and with plum brandy (ţuică), the national drink, as an appetizer.
Bucharest's museums are a destination in themselves, especially the open-air Village Museum located in the Herastrau Park, near the Triumphal Arch. Here you will find village architecture and crafts from all over Romania, including the famous wooden churches from Maramures.
